Not Cool, Charles…..

Just a little over a week ago, the following video went viral.

Most of the people who live in my area (the greater Philadelphia area), remember Charles like this:
BarkleyHere’s some info on this great NBA player, who was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame back in 2006:

Native of Leeds, Alabama who attended Auburn University in Alabama, Barkley averaged 14.1 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game in his career at Auburn. During his career with the Philadelphia 76ers (1984-1992), the Phoenix Suns (1992-1996) and the Houston Rockets (1996-2000), Barkley was selected to 11 NBA All-Star games as well as the All-NBA First Team five times and the All-NBA Second Team five times. He won an Olympic gold medal with the 1992 United States Olympic Dream Team and was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in the 1993 season. A member of the NBA’s 50th Anniversary team, Barkley averaged 22.1 points per game and almost 12 rebounds per game in his 16-year NBA career. He shares the single game record for most offensive rebounds in one quarter (11 in 1987).

For many however, Barkley has been perceived over the years as an outspoken idiot who has no filter.  There have been many examples of this, both during his playing days, and afterwards during his time as NBA analyst.  Great case in point.  Years ago, I watched his appearance on Costas and he said something to the effect that since there was nothing in the rules of baseball that said steroids were banned, then the players who took them, should not be punished by the league. Even if they had gotten them with ‘phony’ prescriptions.  Now, I don’t think it says anywhere in the rules of baseball that you can’t bludgeon someone to death with a baseball bat, but if you do you can pretty much figure you will see some type of punishment. Also there’s no mention in the NFL rules that says you can’t raise and fight dogs, but yet……..

But that idiocy has manifested itself recently in the video shown above.  Interestingly, Barkley had a lot to say about Donald Sterling, the soon to be former owner of the NBA’s LA Clippers, who also has manifested his idiocy via his racist comments that were recorded by a former “girlfriend”.  This is an article that quotes Barkley’s feelings about the Clippers owner:

During Saturday’s TNT halftime show, Barkley said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has to suspend Sterling if the league proves it’s him on the tape making the statements.“This is the first test of Adam Silver. He’s got to suspend him right now. First of all, they’ve got to prove that’s his voice on that tape. But this is the first big test for Adam Silver.
“You can’t have this guy making statements like that. You have to suspend him and fine him immediately.
Barkley went on to say that someone in a position of authority in the NBA, such as a team owner, cannot be allowed to make racist statements.
“If someone wants to be racist, fine,” Barkley said. “That’s their thing. When you’re in a position of power and you can take jobs and economic opportunities from people, that’s what crosses the line. We can’t have an NBA owner discriminating against a league — we’re a black league. We are a black league.”

Well, it’s probably a good thing the NBA isn’t a fat league, because if it was, he’d certainly become the Donald Sterling for fat people.  The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance has called upon him to apologize for his comments.  Peggy Howell, a spokesperson for the NAAFA, said his comments were as hurtful as any insult about one’s body color, and as an African-American, he should know better, she said according to TMZ:

Making slurs about body size is just as offensive as making comments about body color…One would think being a black man, he’d be more sensitive to having his physical body criticized. It’s totally out of line. He should absolutely apologize.”

So today, Barkley made it official.  He is a confirmed idiot.  He was quoted as saying the following concerning an apology not only to the women in San Antonio, but to the rest of the world who found fault with his initial comments:

If you don’t like me or the show, turn it off. And they want me to apologize. That’s not going to happen. That’s not gonna happen. You all can write letters to your momma, your daddy, your uncle. I’m going to have fun on television. You know that I’m joking around. But if y’all waiting on me to apologize, hell gonna freeze over.”

But, don’t believe me.  Here’s the video.

Of course, one shouldn’t expect any kind of apology from a man who actually chastised parents who told their kids to look up to him as a role model, as he didn’t want the responsibility.  He went on to call them bad parents for allowing them to do so.

So, at the very least he’s honest, and not beating around the bush making “excuses” for speaking his mind, like Donald Sterling.  Unfortunately it’s the only nice thing I can come up with concerning his comments.  Honestly, I’d rather have someone stand their ground as an idiot than to give a fake apology in an effort to make the heat go away.

I have several problems however with the entire situation.  First, Charles is a large man, and weighs a lot.  As he’s aged, he’s put on weight.  I find it more insulting that as a fat man (let’s forget that he’s black for a moment), he’s likely also been the recipient of comments and jokes about his girth.  Again, don’t believe me.
BarkleyWhy would someone who’s been on the receiving end of weight jokes turn them around and make comments about others like he has, and then be non apologetic?  I have my ideas, but none of them are worth discussing, because the act itself really doesn’t have a defense.  More important, why pick on WOMEN only?  Carrying a grudge, Charles, or just misogyny?

It’s a joke?  Really?  I’ve already covered this in previous blogs, where the “joker” points the problem back at the person who was offended, as if it’s THEIR fault.

So my question to you, the readers is this.  If the NBA can remove Donald Sterling for making racist comments that insulted almost half of the US population as he did, why can’t the NBA force the Turner Network to remove Barkley as NBA color analyst, since he insulted almost two thirds of the American population (since it’s estimated that 66% of Americans are considered overweight or obese)?  I’d like to hear either the NBA or the Turner Network to answer that question.  I’ll do my best to find out, but if you’d like to find out for yourselves, here are some contacts for both organizations:

Turner Headquarters – One CNN Center, Atlanta, Georgia 30303  Phone: 404-827-1700

National Basketball Association – 645 Fifth Avenue 19th Floor New York City, NY (212) 655-0880

You can also contact the NBA via this link, where you can voice your comments.

I’ll be adding a petition here  to dump this fool from the Turner broadcasts once and for all……that is, unless the women of San Antonio take him out first.  Check back if you’d like to sign it.

***UPDATE*** Here’s the link to the petition that I’ve created to coerce the NBA & Turner Networks to help Mr. Barkley find a new career –

  1. Phil, you forgot that he has also supported Human Trafficking by being caught as a John in a Prostitution sting. He has multiple driving under the influences charges as well as being a domestic violence abuser. Why do these people not have a MORAL TURPITUDE clause for these “elite athletes”? And then there is this:
I think they are suffering from a serious case of male privilege.
