I’ve known Donna Simpson for quite some time now. For those of you who don’t know who she is, here’s a good primer on Donna, and what she’s become “famous” for:
WHO IS DONNA SIMPSON?
This article was published in the post in March, 2010
Donna has become a very polarizing “celebrity” in the plus sized community. Donna’s many TV and radio appearances, and the many articles written about her have brought her noteriety, originally for the website that she modeled for, and later as an individual on her “quest” to be the fattest woman in the world. Many men idolize(d) her as being the poster child for feederism (referring to the acts of feeding, encouraging eating, or being served large quantities of food. Sexual pleasure is derived from the act of eating itself, and/or from the process of becoming fatter. Pleasure may be derived from specific changes to specific areas of the body.) Donna got great pleasure from eating mass quantities of food, as did the man in her life at the time. More important, while she called attention to herself and her business ventures, she accomplished several other things.
First, she exposed the rest of the world to the fetish known as feederism (or feedism), which NAAFA and many others in the size acceptance portion of the fat community refuses to support. NAAFA specifically condemns feederism, claiming that the practice typically involves coercing a person to become larger. They compare this to the practice of coercing a person to become thinner and instead focuses on acceptance. Underlying that stance, I’m pretty sure they’re worried that the rest of the world perceives that fat people are fat simply because they eat too much and do too little, and since Donna espoused both of those policies, simply reinforced those stereotypes.
The other thing Donna accomplished is get the fat community (mostly women) to loathe her for her actions. At one point, Donna announced in a forum that she participated in that she was the Rosa Parks of fat people, and was representing for fat women everywhere. She later took the Rosa Parks comment back, but never understood why she was met with hostile comments for saying she was representing fat women.
How could that happen?
Pretty easily, actually. Here’s why she was shunned by so many.
1. Not every fat woman has a pay website, and participates in pornography of sorts.
2. She presented the image of fat people as lazy and sloppy
3. Not all fat people want to be fatter, in fact, some WANT to lose weight
4. If you want to speak for the community, you need to be articulate, resembling a spokesperson. Most felt she
And here she was, on TV, radio, in newspapers………becoming famous for all these things that other women in the community disliked. So here she was with her fame, yet shut off by the masses that she claimed to represent.
Well, a lot has happened over the past 22 months.
It seems that Donna has split up with her husband, moved from NJ to her home in Ohio, and is now attempting to lose the weight that introduced her to her “fame”. The problem with that is, she is again making her case public. Here is the most recent article that discusses her proposed new lifestyle:
I’ve been a friend to Donna for some time now, though I’ve never endorsed her lifestyle. She knows that, we’ve discussed it on many occasions. As a friend, I want the best for her, and I think that significant weight loss will enable her to take better care of her kids than she would have been when her mobility was limited by her weight. Her paysite is closed. Men are no longer sending food, credit cards to buy food, and enabling her to slowly kill herself. The ex is gone, and that’s a good thing.
So what’s wrong now?
Again pretty simple, as far as I’m concerned. It seems that my friend (who may no longer be a friend after she reads my blog) is still seeking attention, THIS time for losing weight. Celebrities do it all the time. Look at Janet Jackson, Marie Osmond, Jennifer Hudson……………but Donna Simpson? Seriously, if you want to distance yourself from your previous life, you need to remember that your media appearances were part of that life as well. STOP looking for attention. Get healthy, take care of your kids, participate in their lives, but STAY OUT OF THE LIMELIGHT! Making matters worse is she is openly condemning the lifestyle that less than 2 years ago she thrived in, saying that feederism is dangerous. I don’t endorse a feeder lifestyle at all, but that is solely based on my participation and experience in the fat community. That said, I think that it’s an individual choice, but like any other fetish, should be between the people involved and no one else. I remind people that during the filming of the Al Pacino film “Crusing” back in 1980, many gay rights protesters picketed the film set in NYC, claiming that the film (directed by William Friedkin) would present a very private side of the gay community that the rest of the world would likely not be ready for. It’s similar to knowing that many pedophiles attend these little girl beauty pageants, and while the pageants in and of themselves are not offensive, what is associated with them IS.
So, this blog is less intended for my casual readers, and directed more at Donna herself.
Donna, I’m thrilled that you’re improving your life these days. Just one suggestion.
DO IT IN PRIVATE.
